Medical-Grade Microneedling: What Makes It Different

Not all microneedling is equal. Medical-grade microneedling performed by a physician produces dramatically different results than spa treatments. Here's why.

Medical-Grade Microneedling: What Makes It Different

Microneedling has become widely available — from medical offices to spas to at-home devices. But there is a significant difference between medical-grade microneedling performed by a physician and the treatments available in non-medical settings. Understanding these differences helps you make an informed decision about where to seek treatment.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling uses a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin's wound-healing response — stimulating collagen and elastin production, accelerating cell turnover, and improving skin texture and tone. The depth of needle penetration determines which layer of skin is treated and the intensity of the regenerative response.

Why Depth Matters

Spa-grade microneedling devices typically penetrate to 0.25–0.5mm — reaching only the superficial epidermis. Medical-grade devices can penetrate to 2.5–3.0mm — reaching the deep dermis where collagen-producing fibroblasts live. This deeper penetration produces a significantly more robust regenerative response and addresses concerns that superficial treatments cannot reach, including acne scars, deep wrinkles, and significant textural irregularities.

The PRP Advantage

Medical-grade microneedling is most powerful when combined with PRP (the Vampire Facial®). The micro-channels created by the needles allow PRP to penetrate deeply into the dermis — far deeper than topical application alone. This combination amplifies the regenerative response significantly, producing results that neither treatment can achieve alone.

What to Expect

Medical-grade microneedling is performed under topical anesthesia. The procedure takes approximately 30–45 minutes. Redness and mild swelling are expected for 24–48 hours. A series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended for optimal results, with maintenance treatments every 6–12 months.
