What Is PRP Therapy and How Does It Rejuvenate Skin?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has become one of the most talked-about treatments in regenerative aesthetic medicine — and for good reason. Unlike treatments that simply mask the signs of aging, PRP works at the cellular level to stimulate your body's own healing and renewal processes. But what exactly is PRP, and how does it produce such remarkable results for skin rejuvenation?

What Is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma — a concentration of platelets derived from your own blood. Platelets are best known for their role in clotting, but they also contain hundreds of growth factors and bioactive proteins that orchestrate tissue repair, cellular regeneration, and collagen synthesis.

To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn — typically 10–20 mL — and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood at high speed, separating it into layers: red blood cells at the bottom, platelet-poor plasma at the top, and a concentrated layer of platelets in the middle. This concentrated layer — containing 3–8 times the normal platelet concentration — is the PRP.

The Growth Factors in PRP

The regenerative power of PRP comes from its rich concentration of growth factors. Key growth factors in PRP include:

  • PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor) — stimulates cell proliferation and collagen synthesis
  • VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) — promotes new blood vessel formation, improving tissue nutrition
  • TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor Beta) — regulates collagen production and tissue remodeling
  • IGF (Insulin-like Growth Factor) — stimulates cellular growth and differentiation
  • EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) — promotes skin cell renewal and wound healing

How PRP Rejuvenates Skin

When PRP is applied to the skin — either through microneedling (the Vampire Facial®) or direct injection (the Vampire Facelift®) — these growth factors are released and bind to receptors on skin cells, fibroblasts, and stem cells. This triggers a cascade of regenerative activity:

  • Fibroblasts are activated to produce new collagen and elastin
  • Stem cells are signaled to differentiate and replace aging cells
  • New blood vessels form, improving skin nutrition and glow
  • Cellular turnover accelerates, improving texture and tone
  • Existing collagen is remodeled and strengthened

What Results Can You Expect?

PRP skin rejuvenation produces gradual, progressive results as collagen synthesis increases over weeks and months. Most patients notice initial improvements in skin texture and radiance within 2–4 weeks. Significant collagen remodeling and visible rejuvenation typically develops over 3–6 months, with results continuing to improve with each treatment in a series.

Because PRP uses your own biology, results look and feel completely natural — not the artificial tightness or frozen appearance associated with some other treatments. The skin simply looks healthier, more luminous, and more youthful.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP is suitable for most adults seeking skin rejuvenation without surgery or synthetic fillers. It is particularly effective for fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, sun damage and photoaging, dull or fatigued-looking skin, and early volume loss. A physician consultation is the best way to determine whether PRP — or a more advanced protocol combining PRP with PRF or exosomes — is the right approach for your specific concerns and goals.
